General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officers, heads of Audit and Chief Risk Officers face a mounting set of challenges daily. Dan Currell, Executive Director with the Corporate Integrity Practice at Corporate Executive Board spends his days helping legal and risk executives navigate these challenges.
CEB’s position at the center of a network of over a thousand senior risk executives has provided Dan with a bird’s-eye view into the challenges and successes of the world’s best companies. Since 1999, he has worked with CEB member companies to identify and solve their most pressing risk management concerns.
Dan’s focus is on developing and presenting research related to risk management, governance, enterprise risk management, compliance and legal department management. He speaks at CEB-sponsored events and works directly with the management teams of CEB member companies. Over the last decade, he has presented research to more than 500 executive and board audiences in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Australia.
Dan received his law degree from the University of Chicago and his B.A. in Religion from Gustavus Adolphus College. He practiced commercial litigation before coming to the Corporate Executive Board in 1999 to work in the human capital practice, working on questions of of employee productivity and leadership development before joining the Corporate Integrity practice in 2002.
Dan grew up in Toronto, Minneapolis and Chicago; not surprisingly, he wanted to be a professional hockey player. “After 12 years at CEB, I’ve spent almost as much time presenting management research as I had spent goaltending by the time I was 20 . . . almost.” His summers were spent racing bicycles, and while his goalie pads have collected dust since college, he has continued to race at an elite level. Training while travelling the world is a bit of a challenge, but as he notes, there are some great rewards too – “You can’t beat cycling in Europe or Australia – or for that matter, San Francisco. And the weather is almost always better than it is at home.”
Dan lives with his wife and two children in St Paul, Minnesota, commuting periodically to Washington, D.C. (where he has one of his bikes stored) and other CEB offices around the world. “The travel arrangement is a challenge, but working where I live brings family life right to the threshold of my office. The kids keep stealing my scissors. And my tape. I never have any tape. And I love it.”
